HI
I have a 69 Gibson Crest where the rhythm pick up cover is corroding and turning green where it hits the fretboard. The pickguard is not discintegrating - as I have had on my 355 -- which caused corrosion on that guitar. How to stop it and clean it up?? What causes it?

I think it's finger grudoo that causes the corrosion.
If the plating is already pitted, you will not be able to make it look like new. Try cleaning it with some naphtha, and if possible, take the cover to a buffer. Go easy, as the plating is quite thin. Then call Allparts and order a new cover.

Now, I'm not an expert on these things, but...it sounds like moisture has done its dirty work here. I'd follow the naphtha cleaning with a few coats of paste wax. By the way, Dan Erlewine of Stewart-MacDonald IS an expert on these things, and, though he's a busy man, I've heard that he's willing to help people with problems via e-mail or phone; expecially when it comes to preserving vintage instruments. A Crest is definitely worth maintaining in its original form.

yes it is my first post. Great site and information. I repair as a hobby. What I really do is collect vintage. Great stuff. Looking forward to getting to know all.
